~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Pilgrim's Progress tournament at Saint George's School ended with an uncommon five-way tie for first place. John McIntyre, Rachel Price, Patrick Bray, Asmi Jain, and Darshini Dinesh Babu each had 4.0 points. They are listed in tie-break order.
The tournament had been advertised to have the top section USCF rated, but turnout was lower than expected. Five players opted for the USCF section. A hybrid structure was employed so that the USCF section would play four rounds within the larger Swiss. The USCF players were hard on each other--four of the five won two and lost one against others in this section. Melody Ji, one of these four, lost a second game and did not finish in the first place tie with the other three. Jain and Price played in the regular Swiss to join USCF players McIntyre, Bray, and Dinesh Babu at the top. Price beat Ji and Jain and entered the last round as the only player with 4.0 points.
Six others trailed with 3.0.
After a glance at the game half-way through the round, the TD predicted to others helping in the playing room that we would have a tie for first. As foreseen, McIntyre beat Price late in the last round to secure the tie.
There were 24 players. No team award was offered. Three schools had three players or more. Had there been a team award, Saint George's with 9.0 would have beaten Libby Center with 7.0 and Ness with 5.5. The 24 participants represented 14 schools. The TD substantially reduced the original trophy order from 15 to 4 trophies the day prior to the event because at that time he knew of only 12 players registered.  by James Stripes
